“The Mission and the Man Made Clean” | Mark 1:35–45

In Mark 1:35–45, we see both the heart and the mission of Jesus on full display. In this sermon, Pastor David Baalbergen shows us a Savior who is unwaveringly committed to the Father’s will, unafraid to confront evil, and deeply compassionate toward those suffering from permanent affliction.

Jesus begins His day in prayer, seeking communion with the Father before engaging the crowds. Though surrounded by growing popularity and urgent demands, He refuses to be driven by expectations or applause. Instead, Jesus stays fixed on His God-given mission: to preach the kingdom and restore what sin has broken.

As He moves throughout Galilee, Jesus confronts spiritual darkness, driving out demons and restoring purity where corruption had taken root. Like the greater Adam, He does not tolerate the presence of the serpent but actively removes it, restoring true communion with God.

The passage then turns to a desperate man with leprosy—isolated, unclean, and without hope. With compassion that moves Him to action, Jesus reaches out and touches the untouchable. In an instant, the man is made clean. Holiness flows outward, not corruption inward. Forgiveness is immediate, and joy overflows.

This story reminds us that Jesus trades places with the unclean—bearing our shame so we might walk free. Those who have been made clean cannot remain silent. Saved people speak. Transformed people rejoice. Joy in Christ cannot be contained.
