Mark 2:1-12
In Mark 2:1–12, we encounter one of the most stunning moments in Jesus’ ministry—when He declares a paralyzed man forgiven before He ever makes him walk. In this sermon, Pastor David Baalbergen walks us through the first major controversy in Mark’s Gospel and shows us why Jesus insists on addressing our greatest need first.
As crowds pack into a home in Capernaum, four faithful friends refuse to let obstacles keep their paralyzed companion from Jesus. They dig through a roof, lower him down, and place him at the feet of the Messiah. What happens next shocks everyone present: Jesus forgives the man’s sins—claiming divine authority that only God possesses.
This passage confronts us with a powerful truth:
our deepest problem is not physical brokenness, but spiritual separation from God.
Through this miracle, Jesus reveals Himself as the Son of Man from Daniel 7—one who possesses everlasting dominion, authority, and a kingdom that will never pass away. By forgiving sins, knowing the thoughts of the heart, and healing paralysis with a word, Jesus proves that He is not merely a healer or teacher, but God in the flesh.
The healing that follows is not the point—it is the proof. The invisible work of forgiveness is confirmed by visible power, and the crowd is left glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
This message calls us to reconsider our priorities, examine our hearts, and hear the gracious command of Christ to rise, leave our sin behind, and come home to the Kingdom of God.
