Mark 1:9-15

In Mark 1:9–15, we witness the inauguration of the Kingdom of God as Jesus steps onto the stage of redemptive history—identifying with His people, obeying perfectly where we have failed, and announcing that God’s long-awaited kingdom has finally drawn near.

In this week’s message, Pastor David Baalbergen walks through three powerful scenes in Mark’s Gospel:

(1) Jesus’ baptism, where He identifies with sinners and fulfills all righteousness on our behalf;

(2) Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, where He resists every temptation we have fallen into, succeeding where Adam, Israel, and each of us have failed;

(3) Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom, calling all people to repent and believe the good news because the kingdom of God has come near.

Through this passage, we see both Christ’s active obedience (doing all that God commands) and His passive obedience (refusing every sin we commit). His perfect life becomes the very righteousness that covers us. His victory in the wilderness becomes the hope that strengthens us. His invitation into the kingdom becomes the mercy that welcomes us home.

Mark presents a Savior who knows our weakness, understands our temptations, and still calls us into His kingdom with open arms. Jesus invites the broken, the guilty, the weary, and the wandering—because His perfection is greater than our imperfection, and His grace outweighs our sin.

As we look at Jesus’ baptism, temptation, and proclamation, we’re reminded that:

The Father has called us.

The Son has made the way.

The Spirit transforms us.

And because of Christ’s obedience, we are welcomed into a kingdom that is real, present, and advancing even now.
